Blocks from the Chains — Issue #91
wow, hey monday! what’s cracking? i do hope every dad out there had an enjoyable fathers day yesterday and are refreshed and not too hung over to get at this monday — great to see the bitcoin price around 9k, especially when everyone for years has said it will go to zero (who knows but for now, rejoice eh, that’s kinda the way everyone goes about speculation these days!)
echo chambers or communities?
which got me thinking about communties online and the extended echo chamber of decentralized communities is no different from centralized ones, i mean most of them have ended up talking in discord anyway! not a blockchain (oooohh, i wonder if discord will launch a token! — how meta, token on top of a token, token..)
i got excited a few years back when SMT was mentioned, it really made sense to me that websites that did not have an engaged, active community, not niche to a subject but broad (like an online newspaper for instance) could take part in commentary and interaction and get votes and potentially be rewarded for interaction with that platform, sounded like the golden egg for these platforms and businesses that had no bonded ‘community’ as such — plus, traffic means more eyeballs on their advertisers ads (unless you block them of course)
once people found they could block them a majority of people do and so that kinda killed of that click through rate model of selling space on a highly visited site (i wonder if the steemit stats are still high for ad space) — so i’m thinking are we really making communities that people who are already in drive by communities like reddit really interested in becoming part of a niche network that talks about the platform over and over and not much else, is that we want moving forward? lots of different frontends to lots of different communities we can jump in and out of or will they just be groups of a hundred people in an eco chamber that kiss the next persons ass for an upvote?
from what i can see their seems to be a ‘positioning’ around ‘intellect/status’ in these groups where people find their ‘people’ based on safe comfort factors, personally i kinda like the notion of 150 people i know worldwide that have incredible talents and skills and that i can call on to interact with or time/barter trade with for things i don’t have but the idea that these decentralized communities are some kind of communties v3.0 is kinda lost on me when most of the conversations are not happening on searchable immutable platforms (i admit, you don’t want all chat to be public)
disorganized but decentralized.
my personal concern is that we have hundreds (or thousands) of frontends onto a variety of different blockchains that the tech does not matter much anymore and then the devs that work on the lower level code get frustrated and move elsewhere leading to a collapse one day and boom that community is gone, it’s happened to me multiple times on my journeys on the web to the point that i rarely take part on them because they have a limited shelf life.
even now at three years in on the steem blockchain with all the amazing dapps it has and wealth of talent it’s probably going to be easy to overshadow the reach and tech behind it as we move faster and faster into different expressions of how we communicate online — they will be multi faceted that’s for sure, sidechains will be common knowledge and i’m looking forward to the evolution of teaching and learning online.
what tech is getting you excited at the moment?
(for me it’s 5g, new blockchains, new frontends and ways to sign up, kyc or otherwise, faster computers, mobility computing and optimizing what we have left in the world around us!)
